At the end of the XIX century in a still life there comes crisis of the West European realistic traditions. In Gauguin's works he finds himself with the greatest force. Cezanne and Van Gogh's creativity develops still entirely in line with the West European art though Van Gogh and makes use sometimes of experience of a Japanese print in the still lifes with "the overturned prospect".
The West European art of the second half of the XIX century inevitably went on the way of specialization, isolation and allocation from all set of art problems only of some, most acute picturesque issues. Such masters as Cezanne or Matisse, telling about things, showed not all completeness of features inherent in the nature, but chose one of possible aspects, subordinating the work consciously limited figurative system.
